Because that's what the idea was. I would replace my home officstelephone line, which I only use for outgoinyg calls, and instead start making all of my calls over the This way I could pocket the $50 a month I've been givin g to Verizon and use those savinge to buy more important things. Like … food. Excepg it really didn't turn out that way. Why? Becausw the Internet phone services I tried worked ... but just not all the Which is typical ofmost technology. For example, I played aroune with Skype (www.skype.com) for a few Not bad.
Signing up for the servicre was free and the headset that I purchasec from Staplesfor $20 only had to be replacedd once (I do not advise lending one's headsetf to a 12 year old. Enough said). installing the Skype application on mylaptopo didn't cause it to lock up or crash on me. So for that reason alone I felt that thingswere successful. Once up and Skype did as promised just about all ofthe time. I used the littlr computer generated keypad on my laptol tomake calls. If I called anothe r Skype user the callwas free. Unfortunately, I don't really have a lot of conversationzs with high school and college nor do I care to really speao to anyoneunder 25.
So there'a not a lot of phone numberx in mySkype directory. However, you can use Skypwe to call a regular land line and then get chargec a few centsper call. So that's what I mostlt did. The problem was the connection. It worked. Most of the But sometimes it just didn't. Sometimes I had to call back the person two or threes times to get agood connection. Or speak There were a few instancese where I saidnaughty words. Then there was this one time wher e I tried to participate in a conferences call and had to make the three other people wait whildeI re-called the call-in number a few times until there was no cracklingf sound on the phone. That was fun too.
So I stopped using Skype. Frustrated I turned to another Net callinhg service calledmagicJack (www.magicjack.com). No, this has nothing to do with changing the tires ofa car. And there was no pleasur involved. For $40 magicJack ships me a little unit that I plug into the USB port of my I then hook my office phonre intothe unit. After installing the program I'n able to make phone calls from my regularphonr (not the headset I bought from Staples … bye-bye $20). Like Skype, magicJack places its callse overthe Internet, along with the other 100 trillion bits of informatiob crossing the same See where I'm going here?
Their deal is that you can make unlimited callzs you want to anyone in the Unitecd States (I'm told they're working on overseas plans) for only $50 per I did the math and that's $550 less a year than I'nm spending on my office line, so therew you go ... magic! Unfortunatelhy ... not so magical. Why? Same thin g with Skype. It Most of the time. I sufferedr from the occasional disconnected calls or calls that had to be or calls thatjust didn'f sound like a very good call at all. More naughtyt words. More blood thinner required. In the end I brokre down and kept myoffice line. You win I just need things that work as they promised towork ...
all the I have enough headaches inmy life. I have kids and a mortgagw and dandruff. I can't sit around and worry that an importang conversation with a prospective customer is going to get cutofff orsound horrible. Verizon's line in my office works all the It's one less hassle to deal with. I still keep the magicJacki and Skype servicesbecause I've had occasiojn to use them when traveling. Most likelyy I'll forget to cancel my subscription sonow I'lk be paying an extra $50 a year for next to But I'm a penny pincher. Not a cheapskate. it's less expensive to use these Netcallingf services. But I'm sacrificing some quality. Some dependability.
I'k giving myself more headaches. To me, it's not wortuh it. These technologies are grear for kidsor socializing. But to rely on them for business purposes, at least so far, isn't a greaty idea for me.
